Excel is an electronic spread sheet program capable of performing calculations, analysing data and integrating information from different programs. It is a file made up of rows and columns that are used to sort data and allow a user to manipulate and arrange data easily, commonly numerical data. By default documents saved in Excel 2013 are saved with the .xlsx extension where as the extension of the prior Excel versions is .xls.
